Example of Play#

It’s cold and dark on this old factory roof, and the heavy rain almost made Yoshio slip. He’s a vigilante with reality distortion powers, and he just messed with the wrong aristocrat. Now a clockwalker is hunting him, and the damn thing doesn’t know how to stop.

Ting, ting, ting go the blades of the ‘walker as they dig into the side of the building, propelling it upwards, one arm at a time. Yoshio lifts his shotgun towards the source of the sound and takes the Ready action to shoot at the clockwalker as soon as it’s visible. Eventually the metallic head of the creature is lifted over the edge of the roof and Yoshio fires, rolling 2d20 and getting 7 and 4, enough to score two successes and land the shot! Since he also has a Firearms 5 focus, the 4 is considered a critical success, so he gets three total successes, one over the difficulty score, and gains 1 Momentum. The attack deals 4 damage to the clockwalker, and it also has to Survive at difficulty 1 or fall prone due to the Knockdown quality of the shotgun. The clockwalker succeeds and gets onto the roof.

With that kind of armor, the shot did little beside making the clockwalker angrier. It lunges at Yoshio and swings its arm blades in an attempt to decapitate him. Yoshio takes the Defend reaction, and rolls to Survive Swiftly by dodging the attack. He also uses the momentum token he generated earlier to add an additional die to the roll, so he rolls 3d20 in total and gets two successes. It’s more than the single success the clockwalker got, so he manages to escape the deadly blades just in time, and also generates 1 momentum. However, the round is now over, so that momentum is removed from the pool.

The new round begins with Yoshio’s turn. He notices the factory they are fighting on is quite old and gets an idea. He uses a minor action to Create a Trait and shoots below the clockwalker, adding the Damaged Roof trait. He then spends his last mana point to activate the power Enhanced Gravity, which damages the clockwalker and hurls it down. Yoshio’s player suggests his idea to the GM, and she goes with it. Due to the trait, the force of the clockwalker hitting the rusty, damaged roof causes it to break and give way, and the creature falls into the shadowy innards of the factory.

Flowing with the action, the GM spends 2 Chaos to Change a Trait and make it a Collapsing Roof. Yoshio almost falls, but he spends a Determination token to take a major action immediately. By this stage he is out of mana, so he strains to use the Teleport power. He Studies Swiftly to bend reality to his will in the nick of time, and scores two successes, enough to teleport to safety!

Now in an alley at the other side of the street, and with the clockwalker temporarily incapacitated, Yoshio quickly makes his escape. He makes a mental note to be more careful next time.
